Why didn't someone tell me I got so fat???!!!
Ok, they probably did. I'm determined that I should be as fit and strong as possible for this trip. I partly attribute the incidents of my last trip to my lack of fitness at the time. I became fatigued way too quickly in the first couple of days and by the time I crashed I was just a passenger on the bike, and I think I just let myself fall when I hit the rock. This time I'm out for 3 months, and I'm not going to let my condition be an issue.
As part of my training I've been getting stuck into the weights that take up about a third of our lounge room. They've been sitting there since Christmas, with not much more than a few hours of use. "This time is different", I tell myself. After only a two weeks of weight training I already feel stronger, have increased the mass and condition of my arms by a small amount, and my posture has improved. For all those other office workers reading this, make sure you exercise, I used to be reasonably fit, but over the last few years I've wasted away to something that resembles a tyrannosaurus rex. I must try and remember the good feeling that I get after weight training when I am about to start training.
Yesterday I was doing some work at the one of my company's other sites the Oxford Falls Satellite Earth Station, North of Sydney. There's some great mountain bike riding around there so I took my bike and gear. I rode for an hour and a half at a reasonable rate. My heart rate monitor recorded a 1350 calorie burn in that time, which is quite a lot for that time frame. To give you an indication of that burn rate, I should on average consume around 2400 calories in a day. So I burnt over half of my daily intake in that ride. If only I could work out there every day! I'd be ripped!!!
