9 Months to go!!! Anyone wanna buy an R1?

Well, it was made apparent to me the other day that we only have nine months to go before our great adventure commences. It's definitely about time I posted some details about this trip to allow those of you who actually read this to understand what we're heading out to achieve. Before I give you a brief overview of our journey I'd just like to notify you all that I have a 2002 R1 for sale, black and silver, excellent condition, Hyperpro steering damper, gear rack and bag. $12,000 ono. All proceeds go to the "help-Steve-ride-around-Australia" fund. Right now that my cheap plug is complete, I'll continue.

The crux of our journey is to ride around Australia passing through as many of the remote areas as we can using as many dirt roads as possible in three months. Starting from Sydney Sam and I will travel North to Newcastle to pick up Scott, are you counting, that means there's three of us so far! From there we head even further North to Mackay to pick up Lee(the same Lee of a previous journey, see earlier posts), he'll be with us for approximately two weeks to show us the highlights of North Queensland. We then head up to Cape York, back down across the Gulf country up to Darwin. Along the Gibb River Road through the Kimberly to Broome, then down to the Southern parts of Western Australia via Perth. From there phase two of the adventure starts by heading North again to Kalgoorlie, then Wiluna. Our journey then takes an Eastern turn across the Gunbarrell Highway to Warburton, then to Ayer's Rock(Uluru). Sam is so excited to go to Uluru, he can't wait to climb it. We then head up to Alice Springs via Kings Canyon, then down the Finke Desert Race route to meet up with the edge of the Simpson Desert. At that point I'll be so happy to have made it to the part of Australia I've been waiting to conquer, the Simpson. I was robbed last time by an injury as you may have read. Not this time I tell you! The Eastern side of the Simpson Desert leads us to Birdsville from there we'll head South again down the Birdsville Track heading in the general direction of Adelaide, and from there we'll do whatever time permits. My only criteria from that point is that we make it to the Mornington Peninsula, as that will be the last of the four extremities of mainland Australia, Cape Byron, Cape York, Steep Point and the aforementioned Mornington Peninsula.

And then........The trip will be pretty much over and we'll have to return to our real lives.

So, the nine month countdown begins, from here we need to be researching our equipment in a more detailed manner. We've settled on our steeds and associated equipment for them, our camping equipment is all under control, but would you believe the biggest issue we have is choosing riding gear? Jackets are a big one, the tropical climate of the North versus the freezing tempereratures of Southern Western Australia, are causing us to constantly reconsider our choices.

I'll post more information soon on our bike selection, associated equipment, and riding gear soon. I'll also follow up with the detailed itinerary that we've almost completed.
